Judy, I suspect that the grave marker for Frances Mariah Owen is incorrect. Her mother, Satirah was not yet married in the 1860 census and she had a son born in 1861, listed as 9 years old in the 1870 census. She is listed as 6 years of age in the 1870 census, giving possible birth in 1863 or 1864. She is 15 years of age in the 1880 census. Should place her most likely date of birth in the 1864 to 1965 range. In the 1910 census she is living with Elijah in Grant Townships, age listed as 45, mother of 13 children with 11 living. She has been married 30 years. Again, support for birth date in 1864 or early 1865. HOWEVER. Finally found them in the 1900 census...index was wrong. Frances lists her age as 35 and birth date as April 1865. Mother of 10 and 8 living. I think I would go with this date. It is most consistent and quite a bit different than 1862. We know her mother was Satirah E. Swain and father an OWEN. We have been speculating on James Thomas Owen who died in 1864 of illness while in Union service in Civil War. Any thing else you need? I can likely provide most names of her children.

Rumor has it (no proof just hearsay) that Satira Swain married first Press Hearse (what say you Ford?). Since she had her first Owen child in 1861 if true the Hearse marriage was very brief. In 1870 census Satira has Owen children in her household so we assume at one point she had a Owen husband (no marriage record found) and he is either deceased or is elsewhere. On 11 February 1877 Satira married William Jones in Newton County (Marriage Book A, p. 320). In 1880 they are living in Mill Creek Twp., Newton County. In the household is a Lorenzo Jones age 25 (obviously a son by William and his first wife) and Wiley M.. Jones age 2 (born 27 November 1877) son of William and Satira. William Jones died 24 February 1883 and is buried in Shaddox Cemetery. Satira then married William Wynne (can't find the marriage record - thought I had it) Satira married Lewis Daniels 25 July 1899 (marriage Book F. p. 290). They are listed on the 1900 and 1910 Newton County census in Murray Township. In 1900 census there is a Arthur Jones listed as stepson to Lewis Daniels. Arthur obviously son of Satira and William Jones. Arthur Jones married Nevaid 'Zadie' Casey daughter of Jesse J. Casey and Mary McPherson. Jesse J. was the son of Anthony Casey (my gggrandfather) and Mahalia Celia Self. Anthony was the son of Jesse E. Casey and Martha 'Patsy' Coe. Satira died 2 March 1916 and is buried in Buffalo Cemetery. Yes, I can go either straight down my Jesse E. Casey line or branch
out 'sideways' and pick up almost everyone who now lives or ever lived
in Newton County! This is the fun of researching in Newton County.
When I first printed my Jesse E. Casey book many people contacted me
saying they had known so and so for years and had no idea they were
related.

Most of the information below was posted by Lina Boyd a couple of years ago. Lina made reference to Satirah being married 5 times, but from these census records, sge appears to have been married 3 times. Satirah reported in 1910 Census that marriage to Lewis Daniels was her second. We know she was married at least 3 times from all this census data. 1860 Census Newton County, Jefferson Township 289 Swain, Edwin C. 45 M Farmer 800 TN Frances A. 41 F domestic NC F___ N 21 M day laborer TN Satira E. 18 F domestic TN Margaret S. 16 F domestic TN Maria L. 13 F TN JWN 10 M Rubin W 8 M Sebastian C. 6 M Nancy A. 4 F Jas G 2 M 1870 Census Newton County Jefferson Township 11 OWEN, Satirah 28 TN female William 9 AR male Frances 6 AR female 1880 Census Newton County Mill Creek Township 275 JONES, William 61 farmer NC NC NC Satera E. 37 TN NC NC L. I feel sure you are right about the birth dates; I think Elijah, Sr.'s birthdate on the tombstone maybe off as much as 10 years. I guess this happens when the stone is erected many years later and the person just doesn't know. Joyce

Will cite my source of the four previous marriages and I'm not sure that it is correct. Especially when you view the census. Satira E. Wynne age 58 of Willcockson to Lewis Daniels 69 of Murray married 25 Jul 1899 Book F page 290 by J. R. Stephens From a book: Husbands listed were Pres Hearse, William Owen, William Jones and William Wynne. Jones was supposed to have died in 1883. From Vera Dean's marriage book:
I found a marriage for a William Wynne to a Campbell girl in 1883 but none to Satira Jones, but her name was Wynne on the marriage record to Lewis Daniels in 1899. Guess that is where she got the name Wynne. Where the Hearse name came from I don't know. So, what do you think? How many marriages did she have?

There isn't time for a first husband named Hearse between 1860 census and the first OWENS child Satira had, named William born about 1861. So I think by this there is no husband named Hearse. Lina

At the risk of being proven wrong, (I don't mind admitting it in those rare cases...ha ha!), I am going to jump out on a limb and give a possible given name for Satirah's first husband who apparently was surnamed OWEN. First, here are some parameters to consider in matching her up with known Owen men in Newton County in 1860: Facts on Satirah:
Implications:

Sounds logical - BUT - always a but! :-) According to Arkansas union Soldier Pension Application Index compiled
by Desmond Walls Allen there was a James Owen who served in 1 Ark Inf
Co. C whose mother and sister applied for pensions. The mother in 1866
and the sister in 1888. Have you seen these applications or know
anything about them? I also see in Arkansas Damned Yankees An Index to
Union Soldiers in Arkansas Regiments by Desmond Walls Allen that James
Owens enlisted in Co. C 1 Ark Inf. on 12 Feb. 1863 in Fayetteville, AR.
He was 19 when he enlised and was born in Newton Co., AR. Notation that
he died during the war but no date given. I assume this is the same
James Owens/Owen whose mother and sister applied for pensions. If this
James was Satira's husband wonder why she did not apply for a pension?

William, Wonder if Satira drew a pension on the OWENS children for her OWEN(S) husband's service? Has anyone ever looked? Remember Malissa Elvira OWEN HARRIS McHUGHES!! Lina

You will be taken to a page where you will find his e-mail address, as well as an index of items that he has submitted to ARF. Lina, I was thinking the very same thing. If her husband served in the Union Army (as did Malissa's), then she would likely have been drawing a widows/orphan pension by 1870, don't you think? She would also need afidavits sworn before a court testifying to the marriage. William

The following pension applications were filed by widows for minor children immediately after the war. Have no idea if either could be Satira Owen. Neither soldier was from Newton County but Searcy is close. Both were much older than Satira. Since names of widows are not mentioned the only way to know for sure is to order the pension records. Our library has abstracts of some Arkansas pensions and I will check when I get back down there. Found in the Arkansas Union Soldiers pension Application Index: Pension application filed 1865 by widow for minors of James F. Owens Company A, 2 Ark Inf James F. Owen, Co. A, 2 Ark Inf enlisted 15 Feb. 1863 Warren, AR, age 42 born in Lincoln Co., TN Pension application filed 1865 by widow for minors of John T. Owens Company E, 2 Ark. Cav. Theodore J. Owens, Co. Pension Application filed 1865 for Minor of Walter B. Owen
From Arkansas' Damned Yankees An Index to Union Soldiers in Arkansas Regiments: Other Owen/Owens who died in the Civil War. James Owens, Co., C, 1 Ark Inf., enlisted 12 February 1863 Fayetteville, AR, age 19 born in Newton Co., AR (This is the James we have been discussing). There was a William Owens, Co. C, 1 Ark Inf who enlised 12 Feb 1863 Fayetteville, AR, age 26, born Newton Co., AR. According to info in Index to Union Soldiers in Arksansas Regiments he died in the war. However in 1889 a William Owen who served in Co. C, 1 Ark Inf applied for a pension and in 1891 a widow applied for a pension based on service of a William Owen in this same unit (She is probably the widow of William Owen who filed for pension in 1889). I'm not sure how many William Owen/Owens there were in Co. C, 1 Ark inf but evidently at least one died and one survived to apply for a pension. George W. Owens, Co. I (i), 2 Ark Inf., enlisted 12 March 1864 Helena, Ar age 21, born Phillips Co., AR. George B. Owen, Co.G, 2 Ark Inf., enlisted 27 December 1863 Dallas, AR, ago 40 born in Giles Co., TN

Went back to my OWEN info after Vonda posted the results from the Pension lists. Do you remember me posting from the Miscellanous Book from Newton County where John H. and James Thomas OWEN's mother, Elizabeth, filed a (I'm quoting now) 'resolution pertaining to collection of back pay bounty money due her for the services of her sons John OWEN and _____ OWEN soldiers and lost their lives in the service of the Army of the United States. 'Elizabeth, wife of Thomas OWEN late of this county, sometime early in the year 1861 wilfuly abondoned his family. ...... She is legally and morally entitled to perference in the order of payments.' This was from the September Term of court in Newton Co. Looks to me like Satira would have been the one legally entitled to the money for James Thomas OWEN, if he was her husband, not his mother. Wonder if this is also what was in the pension and wasn't really a pension application, but a back pay request?

You will be taken to a page where you will find her e-mail address, as well as an index of items that she has submitted to ARF. Lina, Thanks for sharing the court records. I think you are absolutely correct. Since Satira had small children and did not remarry until 1877 if James Thomas Owen was her husband she would have surely been the one entitled to any benefits - pension - back pay - whatever. Speaking of typos - I believe I typed that James Owen's mother applied for a pension in 1868 - it was actually 1886 and his sister applied in 1888. Of course Satira had remarried by 1886 and I have no idea why a sister would apply for anything. The types of pensions were normally Invalid, Widow and Contested Widow. The type listed for those two were "Mother" and "Sister". I have never seen that before. I wish someone had copies of those pension applications. Even if they were denied they would furnish some good info. Since this is not one of my direct lines I have not sent for the records. All my great greats served in the Union Army and I have all their pension records. They are absolutely the best source of genealogical info one can find. Without them I would be up the creek without a paddle on a couple of my lines! Vonda

You will be taken to a page where you will find his e-mail address, as well as an index of items that he has submitted to ARF. We have been talking about Satirah Swain. Some people have her with 6 husbands. I have seen source documentation verifying 4 of these. I believe, but have not proved, that Satirah's first husband was James Thomas Owen b. 1843 in AR and grandson of William Owen (1777 NC) and Susannah UNK (1787 NC). If true, that ties her in to my Owen's family. Now, she also ties in (non-bloodlines) to the Owen, Snow, Casey, Beckham and Carlson (among others) trees through her marriage to Lewis Daniels a.. In 1897 Satirah E. (Swain Owen Jones) Wynne married Lewis Daniels (b. 1827 IL). b.. Lewis Daniels first wife was Martha Casey (12 Mar 1832 in GA). a.. Their son, William E. Daniels (1858 AR) married Nancy Strode (1856 AR) a.. Their son, Floyd James Daniels (1885 AR) married 2 Dollie Mae Self (1902) a.. Their daughter, Vival Daniels married Ray Owen, grandson of Aaron M Owen (1865) & Safrona E. MEDLOCK b.. Aarom M Owen was a first cousin once removed of James Thomas Owen, first husband of Satirah Swain b.. Mamie Daniels (1911), a g-grandaughter of Lewis Daniels and Martha Casey married Claude Carlton (1903) . If you are a Carlton and descendant of Claude and Mammie, you tie into all of this also. c.. Martha Casey's parents were Jesse E. Casey, Jr (1797 in Laurens, SC) and Martha 'Patsy' Coe (1795 in Roane Co., TN) a.. Martha 'Patsy' Coe was the daughter of Stephen Coe (1873 in Roane Co., TN) and Betsy Hart. b.. Stephen Coe was the father of Mary Elizabeth 'Polly' Coe (1802 in Roane Co., TN) a.. Mary Elizabeth 'Polly' Coe married Solomon B. Snow (1798 NC) b.. They were parents of Stephen Coe Snow (1833 TN) who married Emily Johnson c.. Stephen Coe Snow was father of Calvin Houston Snow (1858 MO) d.. Calvin Houston Snow married Jane Ann Owen (AR 1861 AR) e.. Jane Ann Owen was the second cousin of James Thomas Owen who apparently was the first husband of Satirah Swain where we started. d.. Jesse Casey and Martha 'Patsy' Coe were the parents of Elizabeth Casey (1825 TN) who married Zachariah Beckham a.. Elizabeth Casey and Zachariah Beckham were parents of Lydia Caroline Beckham (1852 AR) and Minerva Elizabeth Beckham (1857 AR) a.. These two sisters married brothers Francis C. (1849 AL) and Joseph R. Stephens (1852 AL) b.. Their sister, Arletha Stephens (1852 AL) married Richard Carol Owen, brother of Jane Ann Owen (above) and also second cousin of John Thomas Owen who might be Satirah Swain's first husband. a.. Arletha Stephens and Richard Carol Owen were my g- grandparents (William Gorman I guess if we tried hard enough, we could find links through marriage among all of us here on Judy's mail list.
