Geographic Description And Census Statistics of Greene County...In April of 1889 there were thirty four steam power saw mills, six stave factories, one shingle mill, and two planing mills, within the county, all engaged in cutting the timber into lumber, etc...

Early Settlers of Greene County The settlement of the territory now composing Greene County began about the year 1820. Benjamin Crowley, grandfather of Hon. Benjamin H. Crowley, and his family were the first settlers, and their nearest neighbors were then at Pocahontas, now the county seat of Randolph County. Crowley's Ridge was named in honor of this pioneer settler...

The First Court Houses and Jails Greene County was organized November 5, 1833. Prior to the location of the original county seat, courts were held at the house of Mr. Crowley the first settler, on Crowley's Ridge. A portion of the time the sessions were held in the house and, also, under the adjacent trees. It is said that the judge of the circuit court, after charging the grand jury, usually sent them in charge of the sheriff or bailiff under a certain white oak tree to make their deliberations. The original seat of justice was located about 1835, at a point five miles northeast of Gainesville, and was named Paris. Here a log courthouse was erected...

Towns and Post Offices The names of post offices and descriptions of towns that were reported to Goodspeed field recorders when they visited Greene County in 1889.

Early Railways ...built in 1888, by a local company, for the purpose of shipping out timber and lumber. The combined length of the through lines of railroad is fifty-seven miles and 3,984 feet, which added to the ten miles of narrow gauge road, makes over seventy-seven miles of railway in the county.

Civil War At the outbreak of the Civil War, the citizens of Greene County, being mostly immigrants or descendants of immigrants from the former slave-holding states, were found to be almost to a man, in full sympathy with the Southern Cause, and consequently lent their energies to sustain it...

School Statistics and Churches, 1889 Religious meetings were held, and preaching was had in Greene County soon after it was organized, and from the best information obtainable societies of the Methodist and Baptist denominations were probably formed during the 1840's.

Poor Farm The County Poor Farm was called many different names such as Pauper Farm, found in the 1920 census for the county. The Daily Soliphone referred to it as Poor House. Whatever it might have been called it was created for good intentions in order to provide systematic and economical care for the poor and less fortunate.

Newspapers Through The Years The first newspaper published in Greene County, Arkansas seems to have been the Courier, published beginning in 1873 or 1871, at De la Plains, the birthplace of W. Jasper Blackburn. Its editor and publisher was James D. Wray...

Marks and Brands Transcribed from a record book located in the basement of the old courthouse. Shows image of first entry in the record, April 23, 1884, and lists the persons and descriptions of their marks and brands, as well as the date recorded and township where they lived.
