by Connie E. Fields 19 La Mirada Ct. Salinas, CA 93901
(There seems to be some family connections between this William Woodward, Jobe Broughton families, Jervis family, and Isham Davis. It is now believed that William's mother could have been Winnifred Broughton (Woodward), a widow, who married Isham Davis in South Carolina. I would like to correspond with other researchers on these families. -- Connie Fields)
William Woodward is listed on Buncombe County, NC census records each ten year period from 1800 to 1840. He was born about 1774. On 8 June 1796, William Woodward received North Carolina land Grant # 363 dated at Raleigh and signed by Samuel Ashe. The land grant was for 200 acres adjoining John Ramsey and Blout's land. He subsequently purchased more land on Waters of Ivy or Forks of Ivy -- land which is now Madison County. (Yancey/Buncombe)
William had been in this area of North Carolina previous to the 1790 census as he served on a road jury with Richard Fortune, Archibald Sloan, John Sloan, Wm.Porter, Henry Allisan, Joseph Scolds, Samuel Scolds, Scott Hughes, John McEfee, James Gilleland, and Henry Ellison.
In 1800 he served on a jury with John McFarland, Rob Gillespie, John Greggory, Ben Greggory, Robert Black, Robert Patterson, Wm. Treadway, John Gash, Wm. Fletcher, Ben Davidson, and others.
Again, at an April Court in the year 1805, he also served with Solomon Knight, Ebed Jonas, William Erwin, Bedent Baird, Samuel Wilson, George Green, Charles Eads, Philip Wilson, Matthew Cole, Samuel Davidson, James Lowrie, Philip Smith, Marmaduke Vickory,John Dillard, Reuben Keith, John Weaver, and others.
In 1806 he witnessed and endenture between Charles Eades and John Justice. Over the years he conducted land transactions with Jobe Broughton, John Sames, Samuel Vance, Henry Hagin and John Ramsey. In 1835 William Woodward and his son John Wood(w)ard cast their votes in the Jervis' Precinct of Ivy.
William wrote his will in 1837, but it was not executed until September 1842. In the will he mentions his "trusty friends" James B. McMahan and Jacob Weaver. He also mentions "girls" named Charlott, Polly, Jenney, Sally, and "boys" named Jarett, Isaac, and Jack who were "bequeathed" to his children.
SECOND GENERATION
Mary Woodward, born 13 May 1802, married Jobe Ramsey about 1820 and had a large family. The Ramsey children married into families that reflect the names of many early families of the area. (See the Freeman connection. CR)
John Woodward, born 1808 in Kentucky. Other families from Buncombe Co. had also gone to Kentucky in the year 1808. But evidently, this family returned to Buncombe County as the rest of William's family was born in Buncombe County. About 1830, John Woodward married Elizabeth Blackwell, daughter of Rev. David Blackwell and his wife, Mary. John and Elizabeth moved across the line to Unicoi Co. TN where John Woodward spent some timebeing the Postmaster at Flag Pond, TN.
Isham Davis Woodard, my ancestor, was born 1811 in Buncombe Co. He married Rebecca "Becky" Webb about 1826/28. Becky was the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Webb. Ben was a "wheelwright" of Buncombe Co. After seeing some of the roads of Buncombe/Yancey, I can believe he was a busy fellow! Isham and Rebecca (Webb) Woodward, along with several families moved to Gilmer Co., GA about 1850. Most of their children moved to Arkansas.(In late 1997 we located gravestone of Judge I. D. Woodard, b.1811 in Springtown Cemetery near Gentry, Benton County, Arkansas. CR)
Katherine Woodward was born 1816. She married Caleb Holcome. This family shows up on Macon Co. Records after 1850.
The last daughter, Winney Robertson, I believe, was born about 1818.
