I was born and raised on a small farm in Newton County, Arkansas. We were dirt poor but we didn't know it because everyone else was too. We went to a one room school house in Compton, when I was in about 5th grade two additional rooms were built on. There was a new church built next door called The Open Bible Church.

I rode the school bus to Harrison to high school and our bus picked up Harrison Elementary and Jr. High students in trade for our tuition. We lived in Newton County, the high school was in Boone County.

We worked hard and also played hard. The only place to go was school and church so we attended a lot of church services and funerals. In high school we had a small group in our Compton Church who sang at the funerals of local people. We also visited the shut-ins on Sunday Afternoon and sang for them.
