CONFEDERATE VETERANS MEMORIAL

This monument perpetuates the memory
Of those who true to the instincts of their birth,
Faithful to the teachings of their fathers,
Constant in their love for the state,
Died in the performance of their duty
Who have glorified a fallen cause
By the simple manhood of their lives
The patient endurance of suffering
And the heroism of death
And who in the dark hours of imprisonment
In the hopelessness of the hospital
In the short sharp agony of the field
Found support and consolation in the belief
That at home they would not be forgotten
Let the stranger who may in future times
Read this inscription
Recognize that these were men
Whom power could not corrupt
Whom death could not terrify
Whom defeat could not dishonor
And let their virtues plead for just judgment
Of the case in which they perished
Let the Arkansawyer of another generation
Remember that the state taught them
How to live and how to die
And that from her broken fortunes
She has preserved for her children
The priceless treasure of their memories
Teaching all who may claim the same birthright
That truth, courage and patriotism endure forever.

Dedicated by the General Jo Shelby Camp No. 1414 of the Arkansas Division of the

the other side of memorial...
Thank God we all can see,
Our flag still flying wide.
I think we should also thank
Those who kept it there with pride.

There are those who faced each day
With blood and fear and tears.
And I believe with all their pride,
Will remember that for years.

Think of the ones who died there,
And the loved ones they left behind.
Can’t you just see the sadness,
That must be in their minds?

Sure we all love America,
But they all loved it too.
And they all did their duty,
As they thought they should do.

So let us show our respect and love,
To all in the service and let them know we care.
For without their help and God’s,
Our flag would not be there.

The Spirit of America will never be held captive as long as we have men like these who endured as prisoners of war.
