288 dwellings were visited and recorded on Schedule 1 of the 1850 census for Newton County...15 individuals were recorded on Schedule 2 as owning slaves. 1,711 persons were named and recorded as living in the county...add to that the below 47 souls who were not named, ....making a total of 1,758 individuals residing in Newton County, Arkansas at the time the census was taken.

The only free black family recorded on the 1850 census was household 288 in Osage Township, the family of Sarah Pulliman.
