Ethel Villines, age 93, of Compton, Arkansas, died Sunday, February 20, 2005, at the Hilltop Nursing Center in Harrison. She was born June 26, 1911, in Mt. Sherman, Arkansas, the daughter of James Walter and Sarah Sally (Farmer) Arbaugh. Mrs. Villines was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Doyle Villines, in 1982; two sons, Frankie and Kenneth Villines; two daughters, Chrystene Clark and Nadine Smith; two brothers; five sisters; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Ethel was a life long resident of Newton County, Arkansas. She was a loving housewife and mother. She loved fishing; gardening; and her flowers.

Ethel Villines is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Sonny and Collette Villines, of Compton; her daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Bob Swallow of Berryville, Arkansas and Wanda and Jerry Donaldson of Shell Knob, Missouri; her sister, Josephine Raney, of Jasper; her brothers and sister-in-law, Loyd "Pete" and Olgie Arbaugh and James "Jim" Arbaugh, all of Jerome, Idaho; twenty one grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends throughout the community who will miss her dearly.

Rev. Donnie Villines will officiate the funeral service. Pallbearers are Shawn Cutbirth, Cody Clark, Ben Swallow, D. J. Collins, Joe Buck Robertson and Braydon Villines. Honorary pallbearers are Ethel's grandchildren and Amanda Chitsey.

Ethel will be laid to rest at Beechwood Cemetery near her beloved Buffalo River in the hills of Newton County, Arkansas. {nct}

A. L. Harp aged about 35 years, died this morning at 5:30 at his home near Marble City, Newton County. He received injuries when he was thrown from a horse December 24th from which he never recovered.

He is survived by his wife and two children, Virgie and Doyle; parents Mr. and Mrs. Joe A. Harp of Marble City; one sister, Mrs. Sarah Taylor of Jasper, four brothers, Levi, Frank and George of Marble City and Bluford of Haskell, Okla.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 1 o'clock at the Shaddox Cemetery where burial will be made Rev. E. O. Lipe of Jasper will conduct the services. {hdt} (appeared in newspaper Tuesday Jan 10, 1927).

Mary Lea (Glover) Burlison died November 21, 2003, at her home in Oklahoma City. She was born June 24, 1937, in Grand Prairie, Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, to Lawrence E. and Jewell (Craig) Glover. She was preceded in death by her father, Lawrence Edison Glover, Sr. and her grandparents, Walter and Maggie (Lamb) Glover and Floyd and Emma (Casey) Craig.

Mary Lea was a long time member of the Church of God (Seventh Day). She was a 1955 graduate of McAlester High School and attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University. She married Allan R. Burlison May 29, 1956. Mary Lea and Allan had three children, Michael Allan, Jana Kaye, and Keith Eric. Mary's chosen profession was a home maker. She served her family, her church, and her community tirelessly to assist all with whom she came in contact. She served as the PTA delegate to the City Council, teacher and youth leader, home room mother and community leader.

Mary Lea was an avid genealogist, gladly sharing each new discovery with her many friends. She collected many items, but she was best known by her family and friends for her extensive 'Doll Collection.'

She is survived by her husband of forty-seven years, Allan R. Burlison, three children and six grandchildren: son, Michael Allan and his wife Esperanza (Cervantes) Burlison and their two children Kevin Michael and Gabriela Ines, Oklahoma City; daughter, Jana Kaye (Burlison) Dolton and her husband, Clifford Dolton and their children, Mary Ashlea and Kathryn Paige Dolton, Edmond, Oklahoma; and son, Keith Eric and his wife, Tammie (Nickel) Burlison and their two children Brittany Anne and Zachary Dale Burlison, Bethany, Oklahoma. She also leaves behind her mother, Jewell Ires (Craig) Glover, McAlester, Oklahoma, and one brother and sister-in-law, L. E. Glover and wife, Linda (Hogan) Glover, McAlester, Oklahoma, two nieces, two nephews and many extended family member and friends.

Services are to be held November 25, 2003, at the Vondel Smith and Son Funeral Home, 13125 North MacArthur Blvd, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at 02:00 PM. Interment will follow at the Bethany Cemetery.

Ray Willis, age 52, a native of Newton County, died Saturday, January 10, 2004 at Atkins Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born April 21, 1951, at Deer, Arkansas, and was the son of Tomey Franklin Willis and Modena Barber Willis Smith. He was a surveyor. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bill and Martha Barber and Gaither and Minnie Willis and two uncles, James Barber and Delbert Kimbrell.

Survivors include his mother, Modena Smith of Knoxville, Arkansas and his father and step-mother, Tomey and Beverly Willis of Lansing, Kansas; and a sister, Carolyn Jean Rhoads of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Funeral service will be 2 P. M., Tuesday, January 13, at the Deer High School Gymnasium with Rev. Troy Lee Plumlee officiating. Burial will be in Deer Cemetery, by Shinn Funeral Service of Russellville.

Pallbearers will be Jay Barber, David Murphy, Jack Mize, Gary Williams, Jarrett and Shannon Willis. The family will receive friends from 7-8 P.M., Monday at the funeral home.

Margaret E. Vaught, 64, of Clarksville died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003 at Johnson Regional Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late James Henry and Martha Susan Case Bohannon, and a Baptist. She was preceded in death by a brother, Earnest Lee Bohannon.

Survivors include her husband, Dub Vaught; two sons, Jr. Ashlock and Wayne Vaught of Clarksville; two daughters, Sharon Williams and Julie Jones of Clarksville; a brother, Odean Bohannon of Lamar; two sisters, Argie Beeman of Clarksville and Ruby Watson of Springdale; 15 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Roller-Cox Chapel officiated by the Rev. Burnett King. Burial will be in Swain Cemetery by Roller-Cox Funeral Service.

Pallbearers: Active - Teddy Ray Bohannon, Roy Shook, Richard Mays, Bryan Landthrip, Ronnie Bohannon and Raymond Young. Honorary - Greg Ashlock, Scotty Ashlock, Robert Vaught, Bill Bohannon, Jerry Bohannon and Jonathan Fales.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

G. W. Byler (George Washington Byler), who lived in East McKinney, Texas died of fever at 9 o'clock Sunday night at the home of his sister three miles south of Sherman, where he was visiting. The deceased was born January 30, 1856 in Izard Co., Arkansas, where he was reared and married to Miss Catherine Bray. He was a prosperous farmer in that state until family sickness caused him to break up and move southward.

He lived in this county for over four years. His wife died January 1, 1912 at the home of Milt Walters who lives south of McKinney.

He is survived by one son, John A. Byler of Allen, Tx and two daughters, Audie aged 10 and Etta aged 5. Also by his aged mother, Mrs. Mahala Byler of near Sherman; one brother, Adler Byler of Sherman and three sisters, Mrs. Barbara Richardson of Arkansas; Mrs. Lizzie Dixon of near Sherman at whose home he died and Mrs. Knox Arnold of Allen.

The deceased had been a member of the Presbyterian Church for twenty years and belonged to the Masonic Lodge of McKinney and the Odd Fellows Lodge of Allen.

His remains were laid to rest in the Ackers graveyard, 6 miles south of Sherman, Monday afternoon, August 18. His son, John A. Byler of Allen was in McKinney closing up the affairs of his deceased father. He stated that an effort would be made to have his two little orphan sisters placed in the Masonic Home at Fort Worth.

Ida A. Zieke, 69, of the Nob Hill community died Jan. 4, 2000, at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville. She was born Nov. 16, 1930, in Nail to Earnest and Millie Simmons Clayborne.

Survivors include her husband, Don Zieke of the home; two sons, Rick Mitchell of Hot Springs and Danny Mitchell of South Roxana, Ill.; one daughter, Claudia Henderson of Nob Hill; one brother, John Taylor of Mossville; one sister, Bonnie Barber of Deer; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Nail with the Rev. Bobby Young officiating. Arrangements are by Beard's Funeral Chapel of Fayetteville. {mn}

Dana Nicole Anderson, 29, of Wichita KS died Aug. 10, 2000. She was a therapy clerk for Wesley Medical Center Respiratory. Survivors include one son, Cody Ryan Anderson of the home; her father, Dave Anderson of Wichita; her mother, Linda Thorpe of Fayetteville; one brother, Brandon Howard of Bella Vista; one sister, Angela Grady of Jane, Mo.; grandparents, Mary Niemann and Chet and Virginia Jackson, all of Wichita.

Dale Leroy Calvery, 65, of Fayetteville died Aug. 21, 2000, at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville. He was born Nov. 2, 1934, in Tulsa, Okla., to Daniel Leroy and Florence Lily Hill Calvert.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne Calvert of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Wes Calvert of Fayetteville; one daughter, Connie Green of Harrison; one brother, Clayton Calvert of Broken Arrow; one sister, Corinne Ferguson of Oklahoma City, Okla.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Broken Arrow. Cremation was by Beard's Funeral Chapel and Crematory of Fayetteville.{mn}

Ora M. Ledbetter, 89, of Springdale died Aug. 21, 2000, at Northwest Medical Center in Springdale. She was born Jan. 26, 1911, in Drakes Creek to Isaac Clayton and Martha Milisa Lewis Drake. She was a homemaker and attended Faith Regular Baptist Church in Springdale. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Artis Ledbetter, on July 6, 1987. She is survived by nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Faith Regular Baptist Church in Springdale with the Rev. Johnny Sisemore and the Rev. Afton Pennington officiating. Burial will be in Drakes Creek Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Steve Pennington, James Pennington, Gary Ledbetter, Ken Brooks, Jack Slaughter and Gene Beasley.

Family visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Brashears Funeral Home in Huntsville.{mn}

Ruth Ann Wilson, 61 of Jasper, died Monday, Dec. 13, 2004 at her home. She was born Aug. 22, 1943 in Lincoln, Neb., to Harold Oliver and Elizabeth Marguerite (Tritsch) Miller.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Joy Haight and a brother, David Miller.

Survivors are two brothers, Phillip Miller of Pruitt and Jonathon Miller of Prince Edward Island, Canada; two nephews, William Haight of Harrison and Lawrence Haight of Jasper; a niece, Christine Haight of Fayetteville; a great-nephew, Brant Haight and a great-niece, Rylee Haight and a host of friends.

Memorial services will be at noon Friday, Dec. 17, at Coffman Funeral Home in Jasper with Stanley Taylor officiating. Burial will be in the Shaddox Cemetery under the direction of Coffman Funeral Home of Jasper.

She moved to Newton County 42 years ago from Nebraska and loved the beautiful Ozarks. She was a member of the Lurton Assembly of God Church and was a Sunday school teacher there for many years. She was a board member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and was the editor of The Newton County Times from 1982 to her retirement in 2000. She then went to work at the Hilary Jones Wildlife Museum in Jasper. She was member of the founding board of the Elk Information Center in Jasper. She continued to write, and authored a regular column, "The Elk Bugle" for The Newton County Times that informed and entertained readers about the flora and fauna of Newton County and Ozark Region.

She was involved in the community being instrumental in forming a first responders group in the county and helped raise money to build the ambulance garage in Jasper. She also worked with the Jasper/Newton County Chamber of Commerce to create the first Buffalo River Elk Festival.

Lester T. Scroggins, 83, of Springfield, Mo., died Saturday, March 12, 2005 at Harrison. Graveside funeral was 2 p.m. Thursday, march 17, at Evergreen Cemetery in Braymor, Mo., under the direction of Pitts Funeral Home.

He was born inn Low Gap, the son of the late Samuel and Belle Dora Reynolds Scroggins on Dec. 12, 1921. He was an insurance salesman, a member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of Westport Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Grace; and seven brothers, Homer, Bob, Duster, Ralph, Check, Doy and Lee.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Litton Scroggins of the home; and many relatives including, a great-nephew, Jimmy House of Ponca and a niece, Betty House of Ponca.

Pallbearers were Jimmy House, Alan Hurd, Steve Dobbs, Mike Ruble, Jamie House and Todd House. Honorary pallbearers included Dennis House, Ott Young, Ronnie Delcour, Dan Davidson, Don McKinnon, Justin House and Baylie House.{nct}

Edna Hoerr, 76, died Monday, February 9, 2004, at her residence in Liberal (KS). She was born July 7, 1927, to John Robert and Nancy Jane (Reed) Edwards in Swain, Ark.

She married Riley Watson, April 4, 1945. She then married Louis Hoerr, May 20, 1973, in Liberal. He survives. She was a longtime Liberal resident. She graduated from Swain High School in Swain, Ark. She retired from Alco and also had been employed at JC Penny's. She was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Liberal.

Other survivors include four sons, Billy Watson and wife, Linda, Liberal, Larry Watson and wife, Kaylinn, Greeley, Colo., Jerry Watson and wife, Mary, Emporia, Danny Watson and wife, Cindy, Warrior, Ala.; one daughter, Judy Watson, Liberal; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Clarence Edwards, Rogers, Ark.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home Chapel with the Pastor Cory Barnett presiding. Burial will be at the Liberal Cemetery.
