He was born March 12, 1925 at Limestone the son of the late Dr. William R. and Lonna Blackwood. He graduated from Deer High School and served three years in the U.S. Navy. He earned his bachelor of arts degree at Arkansas Tech University and went on to receive his master of education administration degree from the University of Arkansas. He worked 45 years in public schools at Valley springs, Western Grove, both the junior and senior high schools in Harrison and North Arkansas Community College where he retired as registrar. He was an active member of Kiwanis and the Harrison Chamber of Commerce, serving as president of both. He was a member of the Eagle Heights Baptist Church for 40 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margarette Blackwood; a sister, Johnna Atkinson and a brother, Harold V. Blackwood. Virgle Ray Hinds, 63, of Springdale died July 26, 2001, at his home. He was born Dec. 9, 1937, in Porum, Okla., to Mack Lee and Mary Elizabeth Killion Hinds. Mr. Hinds graduated from Springdale High School, served in the Army National Guard for 12 years with the rank of sergeant, worked for Arkansas Western Gas for several years, served the city of Springdale as a firefighter for 26 years and 10 months, retiring in 1998 with the rank of battalion chief. Upon retirement, he enjoyed his time fishing, woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Robinson Avenue Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Betty A. Pledger Hinds, to whom he was married Oct. 19, 1962; two sons and daughters-in-law, Steven Hinds and Christina of Fayetteville and Bryan Hinds and Amanda of Rogers; one daughter and son-in-law, Stacey Dominguez and Chuck of Springdale; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill Hinds and Frances of Graceville, Fla., David Hinds and Amanda of Springdale, and Johnny Hinds and Karen of Lowell; four sisters, and three brothers-in-law, Mary Lou Wiltcher of Hickory, N.C., Golda Betterton and Bob of Alma, Linda Gayle Watson and Floyd, Lena Wright and Tommy, all of Springdale; three grandchildren, Christopher Hinds, Blake Hinds and Nicole Dominguez; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Sisco Chapel in Springdale with Robert Curry and Eddie Davis officiating. Burial will be in Bluff Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Lee Pennington, Homer Davis, Mickey Jackson, Tommy Kilpatrick, Virgil Harmon and Ashley Rogers. Honorary pallbearers will be the Springdale Fire Department and the Civil Service Commission Board. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Imogene Beatrice Cortiana, 73, of Tontitown died Dec. 18, 2002, at Northwest Medical Center in Springdale. She was born Dec. 21, 1928, in Tontitown to Beato and Violet Haney Ardemagni. She owned and operated the Elm Twist Restaurant in Elm Springs and worked for Harp's Food Stores for 13 years. She enjoyed sewing, needlework and gardening. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Tontitown. Her husband, Gordon Cortiana, died in April 2002. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Gordon Lawrenz of White City, Kan., and Bev Cortiana of Shawnee, Kan.; three grandchildren, LeAnn Sturdy and Jeff and Melanie Lawrenz, all of Manhattan, Kan., and Matthew Lawrenz of White City, Kan. Susan L. Pocius, 53, of Lowell died Jan. 14, 2003, at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville. She was born Jan. 10, 1950, in Chicago, Ill., to Kenneth and Florence Sirbin McNichols. She was a library assistant in the Springdale school system and was a member of the PTA. She was a Baptist. Survivors include her husband of 31 years, Michael E. Cecil Eugene Woods, 85, of Fayetteville died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at his home. He was born Sept. 4, 1916, in Aurora, Mo., the son of William L. and Anna Hilton Woods. As a young man, he served in the Civil Conservation Corps and retired from Ozark Forest Products. He was former president of the Fayetteville Farmer's Market and was instrumental in organizing the Springdale Farmer's Market. He was a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, clerk and Sunday school teacher. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Alice Ogden, of Tulsa, Okla. Survived by his wife, Dorothy E. Woods of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gene Woods and Patricia of Edmond, Okla., and Roy Woods and Johnnie of Springdale; one daughter and son-in-law, Ellen Woods Swift-Wilson and Jack of Fort Worth, Texas; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. Ann Lynette Stamps, 46, of Fayetteville, died May 19, 1999, in Springdale. She was born Aug. 26, 1952, in Fayetteville, to John S. and Rena Burton Stamps. She was a graduate of Springdale High School and had a bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Arkansas in Conway and a master’s degree from the University of Arkansas. She taught school for more than 26 years, serving in Westwood Elementary, Central Elementary, Lee Elementary and Parson Hills Elementary. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Springdale, singing in the church choir and teaching in the summer Bible school program. She was a troop leader for the Girl Scouts of America, a member of Phi Delta Kappa Sorority, the Springdale Education Association, the National Education Association, the Northwest Arkansas Gaited Horse Club, the Northwest Arkansas Missouri Fox-trotting Association and the Cattlemen’s Association. Survivors include her mother, Virginia L. Stamps of the home; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Russell Dale and Belinda Hodges and Robert Allen and Kari Hodges, all of Springdale; six nephews, two nieces and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Alice Marie Dier Hansen, 98, of Emporia, Kan., died Sept. 6, 2001, at Northwest Nursing Center in Fayetteville. She was a 65-year resident of Emporia. She was a Roman Catholic, a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Fayetteville and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emporia. She retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company after 20 years. She was past president of the Emporia Garden Club, Parliament Club and Bible Study Group, and associate member of the Altar Society and Southwestern Bell Pioneers Society. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Hansen, to whom she was married for 76 years. Survivors include her daughter, Barbara J. Hansen Moore; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren. Bernard A. Mitchell, 78, of Bella Vista died Oct. 8, 2001, at Brooklyn Park, Minn. He was born July 14, 1923, in St. Lucas, Iowa, to Alfred Edward and Edna Viola Bertges Mitchell. He moved to Bella Vista in October 1985 from Charles City, Iowa. He was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Bella Vista. He was a buttermaker and manager of Lidemere Dairy, a former employee of Harrison Ford Agency and a district manager in four states for the Chemical Division of American Cyanamid Co. He was a road-construction superintendent, a Navy Air Corps pilot in World War II, earned two air medals and was a member of St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Springdale. Macel Van Brunt Clark 89, of Elkins, Arkansas, died May 12, 2001 at Washington Regional Medical Center. She was born March 16, 1912 at Combs, (Mill Creek) Arkansas, the daughter of Smith Harrison and Ada Bell Wood Van Brunt. She was a homemaker, wife, and mother and lived most of her life in Washington County. She was a member of the Elkins Church of Christ and was preceded in death by three sisters; Gladys Gobel, Berniece Spriggs, and Colleen Breschick and twin great grandsons. She is survived by her husband, James A. Clark of the home. Three sons' Bobby H. Clark of the home, Max Clark and his wife Letha, of Huntsville, Arkansas and Bruce Clark and his wife, Vivian of Elkins, Arkansas. Two daughters, Virginia Harriman and her husband Gerald of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Charlotte Morris and her husband, William I. of Fort Smith, Arkansas. Charley Meginnes, 66, of Fairfield, Calif. died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001 at NorthBay Medical Center in Fairfield, Calif. No services are planned at this time. Cremation.
