Mother of G. W. O. Davis Dies 1890
In 1837 she, with her husband, moved to Pope County, Arkansas, and settled in Gum Log Valley where she lived a happy life till God called her from the labors of life to an eternal rest in heaven. The year she moved to this state she helped to organize the second methodist church in Pope County, now known as Davis Chapel. For fifty-three years she was a faithful worker in this church. In 1839 she assisted her husband in organizing the first sabbath-school. What a glorious privilege to sow the seed of eternal truth for 50 consecutive years at the same place. But more glorious to her was to see in the hearts of scores of her pupils the seed sown spring into life and bear fruit to the honor and glory of God. Eleven of her pupils were called to God to go out and sow and labor in the itinerant fields of the Methodist church. Bless God for such a woman! Her parents being Methodist and their home being a home for itinerant preachers the seed of eternal truth was sown in her heart in childhood and at the early age of twelve years it sprang into life and for several years she daily grew in faith, works and knowledge of her Savior the Son of God. Being thus educated she was ever ready to go up to the house of the Lord and learn well her duties as a servant of God, a wife, a mother, a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ. To all itinerant preachers she was a mother indeed, a sister in truth and perhaps at no one house have so many preachers found a home. She from her youth to her grave wore that mantle of modesty that so beautifully adorns woman in all works of life. She carried with her all along life's pathway a charitable heart, head and hand; but of her many commendable traits of character, the most noted was her meekness. She was many months conscious that she was "brushing the dews of Jordan's banks". When the help of earthly physicians failed the great Physician who said "Lo, I am with you always even unto the end of the world" came with the comforter and soothed her pains and aches. She was conscious of death's approach and called her husband, hastily extended her hand to say farewell. The bright gleam of her countenance said all is well. She demonstrated the truth as we live so we die. She leaves a husband long past four score years now waiting for 'deliverance to come'. Seven of her children preceded her. Three sons, 30 grand-children, and 31 great-grand children are left to mourn the loss to them. May they all follow her as she followed Jesus. {Source: Arkansas Methodist, January 21, 1891; C.L.
