Low Gap, Ponca, Beechwood, and Boxley Community Index
Newton County, Arkansas
A few miles seperated the towns of Low Gap, Ponca, Beechwood, and Boxley but all were gathered in close, through the bonds of life...families and friends, good times and bad times, birthing and dying. The farmer and wife, the mill worker and miner, the granny woman and preacher man, the grocer and postmaster, the law breaker and peace keeper, the church house and school, the young and the old...all melded into one...a community filled with culture, history, and family tradition.
A post office was established at Low Gap January 17, 1898, James A. Villines was first post master. Ponca post office was established November 6, 1903, with Arthur F. Bickel as post master. A post office was established at Beechwood November 11, 1867, with Abraham H. Clark as post master. A post office was established at Whiteley, December 1, 1851 with Jesse T. Casey as post master...the office was discontinued, a post office was later established there, as Boxley, July 19, 1883, with Samuel Edgmon as first post master.
