From the junction of highways 7 and 27 in Dover, go north on highway 7
for 14.3 miles. There will be a utility pole on your right just past a
woods road driveway. There is what appears to be, a rock crypt directly
behind this utility pole on the edge of this bench.
The Pope County Highway Map shows a cemetery in this vicinity. The road
plans for the relocation of highway 7 does not show any grave. Ethel
Standridge Tilley says there is a grave in this location, but she did not
know who was buried there.
The Pope County Historical Association Quarterly for September 1994 lists
a William Bryan, who was a Revolutionary War Veteran, that is buried somewhere
north of Dover near highway 7. One story says his grave had to be
moved because of the construction and/or relocation of the highway.
This crypt does not appear to have been moved, but some of the rocks have
been removed from it.
The 1840 census for Pope County, Arkansas lists the following:
Bryan, Darius; Bryan, Elizabeth; Bryan, E. P.: Bryan, G. W.; Bryan,
G. W.; Bryan, John A.; Bryan, William; and Bryan, William.
The 1850 census of Pope County, Arkansas lists a Darius Bryan, age 36, born
North Carolina, with wife, Elizabeth and 4 children.
