Dear Mrs. Haddock:

Having researched in Newton County for over twenty years - including the publication in 1983 of A Fowler Family: Ancestors and Descendants of Henderson Alonzo and Harriet (Falkner) Fowler of Orange County, North Carolina and Newton County, Arkansas - I was pleasantly surprised last month to discover someone had read and published the Newton County cemetery tombstones. I was additionally astonished to learn, upon receiving the book, that it had been around long enough to be a revised edition. It's odd that I neither saw anything about it in the various genealogical publications to which I subscribe nor any of the numerous people with whom I correspond. It has, however, been several years since that area has received my full concentration. Perhaps the earlier edition came out in the early 1990's. I truly appreciate the enormous effort put into these books. Since you say you welcome additions and corrections, I want add some relationships, put in some omitted listings and correct a very few dates or names. I have five generations of ancestors in the Western Grove Cemetery, with birth dates from 1785 to 1908. These are some additional facts about those buried there. I've just put down some things I thought of and may or may not be most of what I have.

[Although some men and children had been buried in this cemetery as early as the 1840's,
Nancy is claimed to be the first woman buried here. Most Western Grove people through
the 1870's or 1880's were buried in the Bald Knob Cemetery. You can stand in the
Western Grove Cemetery and look right up on the hill at the stones atop Bald Knob.
But cars can't make the same creek crossings and clear the rock outcroppings wagons can.
The road straight to Bald Knob has been closed for well over half a century. Across
creeks and up hills, this Boone County cemetery is probably half a mile from the
Western Grove Cemetery. By road, concluding with a barnyard and pasture crossing,
it's probably around six or seven miles.]

Nelson, Newton 1835 -
Son Alfred and Nancy (Gill) Nelson
[Note: I'm not sure why the Nelson stones are not listed as they were placed there at
least sixty years or so ago and are quite clear. I believe, but can't say for certain,
that Franklin Claud and Aprilla 'Priddy' (Marshall), son and dau-in-law of Newt are
also buried here. Most of these Nelsons were blacksmiths. I have a garden tool made
by Newt of Frank. Unfortunately, I can't place my hands immediately on the Nelson
cemetery listings. This is among the stones of most interest to me personally. In the
1830's Green O'Daniel and his wife who was a Gill were the first family to come from
Hawfields, Orange County, North Carolina to Western Grove which was then called
Rolling Prairie. By 1847, they had convinced Mrs. O'Daniel's cousin and her husband
to bring their family here. Alfred and Nancy had nine children listed on the 1850 census:
Alfred, Jane, Nancy, Newton, Isabella, William, Matilda and Margaret. Newton is the only
one whose burial site I know. The stone, which also lists his wife Amanda, is in the old
part of the cemetery, near the Fowlers. Alfred Nelson was the son of John and Jenet
(Tate) Nelson and was a much younger double cousin of my third great grandfather,
David Tate, son of James and Margaret (Nelson) Tate. By 1852, Alfred and Nancy had
encouraged a whole wagon train of Hawfields residents, headed by Henderson and Harriet
(Falkner) Fowler, to come to the same area. Others included Harriet's parents, a married
daughter and her family, a Moten lady whose 'kinship' is still unclear and her baby son,
and some Keeters who moved more into Marion County. So that's how my family ended up
in the corner of Boone-Newton-Searcy-Marion County, Arkansas. Nelson and Amanda are the
great grandparents of country singer Willie Nelson, two of the twenty-three of his ancestors
who lived within a five mile radius of Western Grove. Others ancestors' surnames included
Reynolds, Greenhaw, Smothers, Marshall, Standridge, and Satterfield.]

Phillips
[About half of the Phillips in this cemetery are descendants of my great grand-father,
Hugh B. Phillips. I still own 41 acres of the Searcy County farm a mile and a half
east of this cemetery which Hugh, three sons and two nephews of his fourth wife - one
of whom married Hugh's daughter - bought in 1895. The majority of the other Phillips'
are members of one family unrelated to ours. Our family came from Cannon County,
Tennessee via a fifteen year stay here in Christian County, Missouri. Some years ago
(maybe 1989 or 1990), the Ohio family to which the other Phillips family belonged was
featured in an issue of Phillips Family Finder. I can't seem to put my hands on it,
so that I can't give the parents of E. W. and Martha Ann ( ) Phillips. I do know that
the other James B. Phillips (b1891), the other William M. Phillips (b1896) and Xerxes
Phillips (b1901) are sons of this couple. Perhaps Austin and Donna Phillips, son and
daughter-in-law of Xerxes have this information. Donna is the children's
librarian at the Boone County Library in Harrison. I always understood that the two
Charlies were unrelated to each other, our family or E. E.'s family.]

[Hugh d same time as 'Willie', but cannot verify whether that was
grandson, Hulon Wilbur 'Willie' Phillips in 1913 or son, William Marion
'Willie' Phillips in 1915. It's frustrating because I do have the slip of
paper listing materials for his coffin, cost of digging grave and what
bills he had due and I do have grandchildren's recollections of his
long white mustache and bushy eyebrows, but nothing to settle date of
death except that he was 'laid out with Willie'.]

Tate, David 1785 - 1852
The Fowler family group arrived in late summer 1852. Harriet's father who
came with them did not survive the first winter. The oldest son, Pleasant
Fowler, called his grandfather, his 'walking encyclopedia' because he was
so learned. Once had flat stone like Tabitha Falkner's, but were either
collected into one or removed in a clearing sometime in the 1950's. I know
his pile of stones was still intact beside Tabitha's when I was first old
enough to hear and remember the family stories in the cemetery in the early
1950's. So no marked stone
