Arkansas African American Families
ARAA Families

Researching African American ancestors might possibly be one of the more difficult areas in the genealogical spectrum. Long before the days of 'no coloreds allowed' and the designated 'white only' drinking fountains, the records of the African American population were often times limited only to a head count, identified by a term or pen name, and at best, simply a given name.

When enumerated on early census records, a special slave schedule named the slave owner, the number of slaves owned, age of slave, sex, and the designation B for black and M for mulatto, but no name.

Runaway slave ads provided a more detailed physical description than that of the enlistment descriptions during the Civil War, but again, only a pen name or slave ID number...it was rare that a true given name was used.

ARFamilies.info provides a location for genealogical and family histories of African Americans with an Arkansas connection. If interested in these efforts, you are encouraged to submit info and pictures of your families, as well as information that might help those who are searching for their ancestry.

Do you have an Arkansas ancestor who was a slave owner? Please send a family chart or other information on that ancestor and his family. All things could lend a hand to those researching their Arkansas African American Families. The mention of a negro or colored in old newspaper articles or perhaps the name of a master or plantation, might be a helpful clue.
