Joel L. Cherry, a prosperous farmer and stock breeder of Washington County, Ark., is a son of John Cherry, who was born, reared and married in Tennessee, and afterward became a farmer of Howard County, Mo. He was a soldier in the War of 1812 under Gen. Jackson, and was at the battle of New Orleans, and died in 1858. His wife, Elizabeth Boyer, was born in Tennessee, and became the mother of ten sons, four of whom served in the Confederate Army and one in the Union Army. She died in 1868 at the old home in Linn County, Mo.
Joel L. Cherry was born in Howard County, Mo., September 19, 1823, and was reared in Linn County, marrying there, in 1842, Miss Mary A. Hines, a native of Howard County. She became the mother of nine children, six of whom are living: Isaac, Lewis, John T., Elizabeth (wife of Walter Asher), Susan (wife of John Cohea) and Mary (wife of Murray Cowan).
Mr. Cherry resided on a farm in Linn County until the fall of 1860, when he came to Washington County, locating on the farm of 200 acres where he now lives. He has 150 acres under cultivation, and is in a prosperous condition financially. In 1861, as his sympathies were with the South, he joined the Confederate Army, and was a faithful soldier until the close of the war. After his return home he and his sons began to improve the farm, which had sadly deteriorated during his absence, and their efforts were attended with good results. The family are members of the Primitive Baptist Church.
