Benjamin Franklin Taylor enlisted February 27, 1863 at Fayetteville, Arkansas in Company K, 1st Arkansas Infantry, became a Sergeant. On October 24, 1863 he was assigned to recruiting duty for the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry and raised Company M. Benjamin Taylor was commissioned as a Captain, Company M, 3rd Regiment, Arkansas Cavalry from Calf Creek, Searcy County, Arkansas on February 14, 1864. The unit was stationed at Lewisburg, Arkansas. Capt. Benjamin F. Taylor was honorably discharged June 13, 1865.

Company M was mustered on February 10, 1864 for three years or the duration of the war, and was mustered out 30th June 1865. Company M, 3rd Arkansas Cavalry saw action with scouts in Northern Arkansas and Southern Missouri, was in Searcy County on several occasions. Captain B. F. Taylor's men arrested and executed Confederate Captain Horace H. Brand on the headwaters of Cellar Creek.

The 3rd Arkansas Cavalry also saw service with General Frederic Steele's expedition against Camden, Arkansas and participated in the engagements and actions at Jenkins' Ferry April 30, 1864, Mark's Mill April 25, 1864, and Prairie D'Ann April 9-12, 1864.

The War of the Rebellion, A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies mentions the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry scouts with Sgt. Ebenezer Arnold in Pope County: 'Sergeant Arnold returned from scout to Searcy County, killed two rebels, had one man wounded. Rebels are getting quite numerous in vicinity of Dover and Illinois Bayou. I think they are expecting through Dover en route south.'
