Andrew Jackson LINAM was the twelfth child of John Hodges LINAM and Judith TEAGUE of Lawrence Co. TN. He was born 02 February 1832 in Lawrence Co. TN died 30 January 1919 at Morrilton, Conway County, Arkansas. He married Mary Ann BOWDEN on 01 September 1853 in Lawrence Co. TN. This is filed in Book A page 140. They were married by John S. Williams, Minister. Mary Ann was born 24 November 1834 in Lawrence Co. TN died 06 April 1906 at Dover, Arkansas. She was the daughter of James BOWDEN and Elizabeth McANALLY of Lawrence County Tennessee. A. J. and Mary Ann LINAM are buried in McFadden Cemetery at Dover, Arkansas. He served in the 9th Tennessee Cavalry as a Private in the Civil War.

Andrew Jackson Linam was a small man, who had gray hair and wore a small moustache and a goatee. A great grandaughter, Bertha MARTIN, said she never saw him that he didn't have on a suit and tie. He smoked a clay pipe. He grew his own tobacco and made it into twists that were stored in the smoke house. In order to plant his tobacco, he first burned a brush pile and turned the ash from this fire under. Then the tobacco seeds were sown. Plants were later transplanted into rows. The leaves were harvested as they turned yellow.

Andrew and Mary Ann moved to Dover from Lawrence Co. about 1880 to live with their son, Harrison Berry LINAM. Berry Linam moved his family to Texas about 1906. Andrew planned to go with them, but because his wife and a son-in-law, Jesse OWENS, died within two days of each other, he decided to stay with his daughter, Mary Madora 'Dora' OWENS in Dover, Arkansas. Dora and Jesse OWENS had three small children and Andrew helped to raise them. He was the only father Finis Owens ever knew. Jesse died when Finis was four months old. Finis had a whet stone that his grandfather dug up on the old Linam Plantation in Tennessee.

Mary Ann BOWDEN LINAM is described as a very quiet person, who was a very talented piano player.

Andrew Jackson Linam died of Pneumonia.

'DEATH of CONFEDERATE VETERAN On December 30 there passed away an old and well known veteran of the Civil War. Mr. Andrew Jackson LINAM, father of Mrs. George Vance, who had been a resident of Dover for many years. He died at Morrilton, Arkansas while on a visit to his grand daughrter, Mrs. Claude Massey, the cause of his death being pneumonia. Mr. Jackson, who lived with his daughter, Mrs. Dora OWENS at Dover, was born in Lawrence County, Tenn. Feby. 2nd 1832, and was therefore in his 87th year. He married Miss Mary Ann Bowden in Tennessee, and was the father of 10 children of whom 8 are still living. He served through the Civil War in the Confederate army, having many and varied experiences in that great struggle. He was converted and joined the ME Church South at the age of 52 years, and was afterwards a loyal and consistent member. The remains were brought back from Morrilton and interred in the cemetery at Dover.'

I have often wondered about this obituary date. The clipping was with my aunt's pictures and there was no date on it. It does say he died December 30, yet his tombstone has he died January 30, 1919. The old newspapers in Pope County have a skip from Dec 1919 to Feb 1921. For January 1919 there is only one date January 23.
