General Sherman Phillips Submitted byJohn P. Sartin, his Grandson Thanks John! |

General Sherman PHILLIPS was born on December 12, 1886, in Parthenon, Arkansas and was the last of nine children and the sixth son of Daniel Russell and Clarissa PHILLIPS. Daniel was a prominent farmer and merchant in Newton County.
General Sherman was named for General William Tecumseh Sherman of Civil War fame who had met Daniel at the time of his mustering out from the Union Army at La Grange, Tennessee.
In 1906, he married Mary Elizabeth (Mollie) BRAUDRICK (DOB 22 Jul 1888) of Mount Sherman, Arkansas. Mollie was the second child and the first daughter of Thomas Jefferson BRAUDRICK (DOB 12 Mar 1849) of Fort Smith, Arkansas and Sadie Jane SPENCER (DOB 9 Apr 1865) of Evanston, Indiana.
On November 27, 1907, Sherman and Mollie had their first daughter, who they named Pearl Louise and on December 22, 1910, they had their second daughter, Hazel Nell.
Mollie was a school teacher and taught in different schools in the area while Sherman attempted farming,
In 1917, Sherman enlisted in the Army (Serial# 4855-917) as a wave of patriotism moved though the area. His dad, Daniel had fought in the Civil War and it was time for Sherman to fight for his country. Besides that, he didn’t care much for farming and his prospects for inheriting land were slim, since he was the last son.
He went to basic training and immediately was sent to France. There, he participated in some of the worst fighting in the war. In 1918, he was gassed with mustard gas during a fierce battle and was sent to an army hospital in France. He was sent home after the treaty was signed.
He was very ill when he returned and was sent to an army hospital in Kansas City, Missouri and later was transferred to Carthage, Missouri, where he died at the age 34 on November 21, 1921.
He was buried in Wild Rose Cemetery in Webb City, Missouri on November 23, 1921. His grave site was unknown and unmarked until 1995, when the location was found by his daughter, Hazel. She had a marker placed on his grave.
