Bert Hamilton and wife, Rosie Keith Hamilton

This Letter from Mr. Forrest Fillingham
Harrison, AR
02/08/1977

Mrs. Fipps, In answer to your letter of inquiry about Bert Hamilton, I knew Bert well when we were in service during WW l and were good friends. I talked to him less than five minutes before he was killed. He was serving with I CO 126th Inf. 32nd Div. at the time and was killed near Mt. Faucon, Meuce Argonne Forest France I think it was Sept 28th 1918.

We were clearing service records to go up, he came to where we were and told us that Lenness House was wounded. I asked him how badly, he said in the foot and ankle and talked a while and walked away. In just a few minutes another man came up and said Bert Hamilton was killed. I said, I guess not, that he was standing there talking to me not five minutes ago. He said yes, but that shell that hit that tree, a splinter killed him and I never knew anything further about him.

You asked who his wife was. I only knew she was a Keith, I never knew her and don’t know her name. Why don’t you write to Lenness House, he served with Bert in the same outfit. He and Bert were chums before they entered the service back in Newton County, Arkansas.

(A copy of this letter was sent to me by Mrs. Fipps in July 1989. I do not remember who Mrs. Fipps was but I sent her a photo of Bert Hamilton and Rosie Keith. Rosie Keith was in one of my family lines and I have other photos of her. Joan Hobbs)
