Reading these old papers of Izard County tells a little about the hard times.

1936 was so dry they were driving across the rivers in places and in some places even walking across by stepping on rocks. Here's an article that might tell you how hot it was that summer.

Heat Pops Corn For Newport Man
J. N. Shirley of near Newport has proof that the weather has been warm down on his farm. The evidence is an ear of popcorn, part of which has been popped by the intense heat. Shirley said that half his crop of popcorn was in the same condition.
