Dr. John C. Amis, physician and surgeon, at Springfield, was born
in Knox County, Kentucky, in 1859. He is the son of Wilkerson and
Mary J. Hopper Amis, who were born in Clay and Knox Counties,
Kentucky, respectively; married and have since lived in Knox
County. Mr. Amis is about 74, and Mrs. Amis about 61 years of age.
Both have been members of the Missionary Baptist Church for nearly
forty years. He was all through the war in the Federal army, first
in the 7th Kentucky Infantry, for a short time in field service,
and then on special duty as a courier during the remainder of the
war. Served in Kentucky, East Tennessee and West Virginia on many
dangerous undertakings. He was the son of Thomas Amis, who was
born in East Tennessee, and died in Clay County, Kentucky, when
Wilkinson was but two years old. He was a successful teacher and
planter; was very wealthy and was of English descent. His father,
Judge John Amis, born in North Carolina, was of the first
generation born in America, and was a successful lawyer, Was
Circuit Judge in Kentucky, and was shot by an outlaw while holding
the first Circuit Court ever held in Clay County of that State.
Maternal grandfather, Harris H. Hopper, was a Tennesseean by
birth; moved to Knox County, Kentucky, at an early day. He was
of English descent. Our subject was the second of eight sons and
four daughters, only one of whom is dead. He was educated in the
schools at home, and at Union College in Knox County for one year,
and one year at the State College at Lexington. He began the study
of medicine at night and during spare time while clerking in a
store for some eighteen months and in 1880 entered the medical
department of the University of Louisville, Kentucky, and
graduated in 1882, in a class of seventy-six. He soon located at
Pineville, Bell County, Kentucky, where he practiced till 1885,
when he came to Arkansas and located at Springfield, this county.
Here he has built up a most successful practice. He was married in
1883 to Lizzie, daughter of Rufus M. and Mary Moss, natives of
Bell County, Kentucky, and Lee County, Virginia, respectively. Mr.
Moss now lives in Garrard County, but Mrs. Moss died at her
daughter's birth, in Lee County, Virginia, in 1862. To the union
of the Doctor and his estimable wife have been born one son and
two daughters. The Doctor is a member of the Conway County Medical
Association. He is a public spirited citizen, and any enterprise
that has a tendency to elevate and enhance the interests of
Springfield and the general public, will receive his most earnest
support. Soon after his arrival at Springfield the people began to
agitate the subject of establishing an Academy at that place, and
the Doctor at once became an active advocate of the undertaking.
The success of this movement was largely due to his earnest work
He served three years as secretary, for two years has been
president and acting president of the organization.
