The patentee was the first owner of property after the initial survey.
Once the patent was issued, the land became private property and
was then sold with a deed. The townships, the six-mile-square land
blocks which were the original divisions of land from the federal land
grants, were then divided into 36 one-mile squares. The township
numbering was the north-south numbering, starting from the center
line. The range numbering was the east-west numbering, starting
from the center line. The section is the one-mile-square portion
(approximately 640 acres) of a township. That was also generally
divided into 36 equal squares (each of which might be divided
another 36 times).

In 1900 census, he can not read or write. He owns his own farm.
"Can't tell" where his parents were born.

"The Priest Family farm was about one mile from the general store
in Yocum, Arkansas, about 4 miles from Oak Grove and about 8
miles from Green Forest, Arkansas. The post office in Green
Forest delivered their mail, therefore we always said that
the family lived in Green Forest" according to Paulene Priest
Spenser.

There was a creek next to the house in Green Forest that you had
to forge to get to the road. The creek had leeches and arrowheads.
Frances DeYoung Gasslander remembers playing in the creek as a
child when she visited her Grandparents.

According to Paulene Priest Spenser he was a tall man at least 6'
tall and was heavy. They raised all their vegetables and animals,
mainly pork. His favorite meal was pork chops floating in grease.
The doctor warned him that he needed to change his diet or it
would kill him. Mont's response was "he would die a happy man."

In the 1900 census Addie reports that she had been married 12
years, had 6 children and 6 children were alive. She can not
read or write.

In Ellen Priest's family record it states that James L had a
twin sister Martha.

Pauline Priest Spenser who grew up on the family farm remembers
her Grandmother as "... a sweetheart. She was a good cook and
a wonderful Grandmother." She couldn't read or write so when
Pauline was in high school she taught Addie to read and write
some so she could write to her daughter Ellen who had moved to
Washington. Pauline remembers she was so excited when she got
letters from Ellen.

Notes for SARYELEN PRIEST:
Ellen went to Harrison, Arkansas for High School and lived
with a family there doing housework for room and board.
************************
At eighteen she asked her father if she could go to Washington.
Apparently he had been to Spokane (probably through working for
the railroad). He said ok since she had cousins in LaBam,
Washington. About 1910 she got on the train and came west.

In LaBam she worked for the Quinault Logging Company. After living
in LaBam for about a year, the Painter Family (Abner Priest wife's family)
in Auburn needed help. She lived with them for awhile and then went to
stay with the Alban family in Kent who lived next door to the DeYoung's.
**************************
Northshore Citizen, August 15, 1963 "Live for Today, Keep Busy," Say
Woodinville's DeYoungs "For a full life, live for today," advised
Mrs. John DeYoung of Woodinville this week as she reviewed 50 years
of married life. "And keep busy," her husband added. "Time goes
fast -- all too fast sometimes."
The DeYoungs, who have been married 50 years today, observe their
golden wedding anniversary Sunday with an open house from 2:30 to
4:30 p.m. in the Woodinville Methodist Church. Joining to stage
the open house are the couple's six children, all residents of the
Northshore area. DeYoung founder of the Lowell DeYoung Company of
Woodinville, came here with his wife and four of their children on
Feb. 25, 1925. "I remember the date because that's the day I started
in business for myself," he said. "I was with Carnation for 16
years before that, but I always had kind of a hankering for my own
business." DeYoung was born at Grand Rapids, Mich. and came to
Washington State in 1897. His wife is from Arkansas and has lived
in this state the last 52 years.
The couple was married at Kent on Aug. 15, 1913 and lived there
until moving to Woodinville. DeYoung retired from the feed and
fuel company earlier this year. It is now operated by one of his
sons, Lowell, of Woodinville.
The couple has four other sons, Milford of Kenmore, Robert of Bothell,
and James and Al, both of Kenmore; a daughter Mrs. Richard (Frances)
Gasslander, and 15 grandchildren.
They are members of the Woodinville Methodist Church and the Sammamish
Valley Grange. Mrs. DeYoung has been active the last 40 years in the
work of the Children's Orthopedic Hospital and helped organize the
Cottage Lake guild here. She was also awarded a PTA life membership
some 10 years ago by the Woodinville PTA.
"I was embarrassed when I got it," she said, "until they explained
that it wasn't just for PTA work but for all my community work. I could
think of lot of others who had done more in the PTA than I. But I
always was interested in all the worth-while things of the community.
At 70, Mrs. DeYoung continues her varied interest, which includes
caring for her extensive flower garden. Her primroses have earned her
many a blue ribbon at flower shows. She also counts among her favorite
hobbies the baking of rolls and other goodies. And she enjoys her
grandchildren, but no more, she claims, than she did her own children.
She wonders about the tendency among today's young mothers to say they
want to have their children early in their marriages to "get it over
with."
"Get it over with," wonders Mrs. DeYoung. "Don't they know that while
their children are young is perhaps the most enjoyable time in
their lives?"
Spacing children close together is a mistake, in her opinion.
"The young mothers are too tired then to enjoy their babies,"
she said.
Again she emphasized the value of living each day as it comes and
enjoying whatever it has to offer.
"You can't live in the past," she said, "and you can't know what
tomorrow brings."
And for a successful marriage, she feels you can't beat the oft-repeated
advice to "give and take."
"You can't have everything your own way," she said.

September 3, 1969 Northshore Citizen
Community Profile by Terri Malinowski

If the late John DeYoung hadn't scanned his Sunday paper one day in
1925, the Northshore community would have been poorer in many ways.
"We lived in Kent and my husband had a good job," recalls his widow,
Ellen DeYoung. "But he always wanted his own business."
When John DeYoung discovered a general store for sale in the classified
ads, "We climbed right in the car and drove to Woodinville that Sunday,"
Mrs. DeYoung said.
What the DeYoungs saw of Woodinville and Clara Teagarden's general store
that day convinced them the community had a future.
Borrowing $700 and investing every cent of his own, John DeYoung bought
the store, where the Woodinville Texaco station is located today.
"I had misgivings about moving to a jumping-off place where logging was
the only support of the town," Mrs. DeYoung remembers. "But I decided to
help make the community better."
In the 44 years since that afternoon Ellen DeYoung has been true to her
word. Setting the pace with her tireless efforts on behalf of civic,
business, and religious activities, she imbued her six children with the
same dedication to public stewardship.
Yet she will say modestly, "No mother could be as lucky as I. All my six
children are around me. Besides, I have 15 grandchildren and one
great-grandchild."
Her husband, who died several years ago, began his contribution to
Woodinville when he built his own general store and post office
beside the old one.
In another building across the road, he operated a lettuce-packing shed.
When that era ended, John DeYoung converted it to a feed and fuel
operation.
That same location today houses the Lowell DeYoung Co., a large
feed-milling concern and fuel distributorship.
Although Mrs. DeYoung pooh-poohs any notion that her family has evolved
a business dynasty, she is proud of their varied talents.
Ellen DeYoung knows the strengths and weaknesses of her youngsters,
and her pride shines through any recitation.
"Milford, the eldest, has an excellent aptitude for math." she says.
"He graduated from the UW at the age of 20."
Milford, who lives at Edmonds, teamed with his father to open
Woodinville Hardware and later assumed the business himself. Today,
he operates a tax service in Bothell.
Frances Gasslander, the only daughter, attended Cornish School of
Arts and the UW. "She would have been a fine teacher," her mother
says. Mrs. Gasslander is a church organist, teaches organ and piano
and is active in the community. She and her brother Lowell live at
Woodinville.
The second son Lowell, "inherited his father's business head,"
according to Mrs. DeYoung. He purchased his father's business during
World War II and added a feed milling operation.
My youngest sons, Jim and Al, were in high school then," recalls
their mother. Lowell gave them after-school jobs so they would have
money to jingle in their jeans."
In recent years, Lowell has been serving as fire district commissioner
and board member of a local bank. He constantly works through the
chamber of commerce for the business future of his community.
Bob, recently named to the Bothell City Council, served many years as
a Northshore School Board member and is president of the Bothell
Library Board. He is a mail carrier for the Woodinville Post Office.
"He could have been a lawyer," His mother proudly declares. "He is
outgoing and convincing, no matter what he tackles."
The remaining sons, Al and Jim, live a block apart on a Kenmore hillside.
Al has remained with his brother, Lowell, in the Woodinville business
enterprises. He presently serves on the Northshore School Board and
works in allied school activities.
"He has a lot of warmth and sympathy with people," his mother nods.
Jim, the only son to work outside the Northshore community is a Lynwood
banker. "He was born with banking in his blood," Mrs. DeYoung insists
with a smile.
Pursuit of education is something Ellen DeYoung values highly. While
her children were at Woodinville grade school and Bothell High School,
she worked beside the school administrators to provide extras that
school funds didn't cover.
During the Depression, she walked miles of dusty Woodinville roads to
solicit money for a school lunchroom. "I collected $85 one day," she
recalls with a pleased look.
Mrs. DeYoung waited until the lunchroom opened and then tackled the
county school superintendent for reimbursement. The surprised
administrator caved in quickly and refunded the lunchroom costs to her.
She promptly used the money for other school needs. "before he changed
his mind," she added impishly.
Although she was a charter Woodinville PTA member, she consistently
refused the presidency. "I could always accomplish more as a worker
and voice my opinions when I wanted," she says.
In recognition of her numerous contributions to education, the
Woodinville PTA gave her its first Golden Acorn award 15 years ago.
Another area which received full attention from Ellen DeYoung was
her church membership. "The Woodinville Methodist Church had about
seven members when we first moved here," she recalls. Today, she is
still an active member of the large church and its original women's
society.
From the trim, imposing New England colonial her husband built for
her 37 years ago on the main road of Woodinville, she watched the
community grow. "I've seen many changes from my front window on
Main Street."
Last fall, she reluctantly left the house and moved to a compact
Bothell apartment at her family's insistence. There, she is close
to stores and shops. "And Lowell comes each Sunday to take me to
church at Woodinville." she adds. "I enjoy it here, and I'm never
lonely."
It would be difficult to be lonely, for Ellen DeYoung's children
and grandchildren are constant callers. Friends drop in frequently,
including her in community activities as always.
Besides, she enjoys traveling. "I love to fly," she says saucily.
"I didn't even clutch an arm on my first flight."
Her one unfulfilled wish is to visit the Holy Land. "I may do it yet,"
she adds with the familiar family determination. No one who knows
Ellen DeYoung will dispute her.

Northshore Citizen - Home of Note, about 1965
A creamy yellow colonial house in the heart of Woodinville has been
the John DeYoung family home since it was built in 1930. Most of the
couple's six children were raised there, and in turn, have settled in
the Northshore area themselves. Now the ten-room colonial house has
become familiar to the grandchildren as well. Mrs. DeYoung found the
original plans for the house while browsing through a home magazine
some 35 years ago and turned the sketches over to Woodinville contractor
E.D. Miller. He devised this traditional home whose rounded roof and
classic entrance make it as distinctive in Woodinville as it would be in
its native New England.
The interior features high cove ceilings throughout the house. The tile
fireplace was installed at a time when tile was just entering the home
building scene. The bricklayer combined large tile blocks of pastel blue
and beige to form an interesting pattern of the fireplace.
A classic entry hall leads directly to either the living room, second
floor stairway, or dining room. Under the rounded roof are the
second-story bedrooms. Mrs. DeYoung has converted the center room on the
north side of the house to a sewing room, where a window wall gives her
natural light plus an interesting view downward to busy NE 175th St.
*****************************************
The DeYoung family had a member attending the Northshore School system
continously from 1925 when they moved to Woodinville to 1994, when 69 years
later Wendy Cooper Al DeYoung's granddaughter graduated from Woodinville
High School.

Notes for HANS JOHN (DEJONG) DEYOUNG:
He was born in the 5th Ward of Grand Rapids, MI.

He worked in Kent for the Carnation Can Company as a "tool and die man."
When they shut down the factory about 1920 he could have transferred to
Carnation's factory in San Jose, California. John had gone to San Jose to
get settled while Ellen, who was pregnant with Bob, rented the house and
packed their belongings for the move. John called and told Ellen he didn't
like San Jose and they weren't moving. After coming back to Kent he then
worked in Seattle and in a hardware store in Auburn. In 1925 the family
moved to Woodinville when he purchased a Mercantile from Mrs. Clara Teegarden.

Harry Teegarden married Clara Jacobsen, who was one of the first
schoolteachers in Woodinville. Clara opened a grocery store and operated
it until she got tuberculosis. John DeYoung bought Clara's store.

A fire burned out the hotel, blacksmith shop and meat market. This was
rebuilt as the Woodinville Mercantile Company. On one end was Teegarden's
Blacksmith Shop, the post office was in the center, then came the mercantile
and a hay and feed store. Across the street was John DeYoung's old store.

John DeYoung's sons and daughter all became active in the community.

He also owned a lettuce packing plant, a shingle mill and a hardware store.

Obituary

Article in the Woodinville Weekly 1883
"Every town has its memorable people. Of all the early pioneers the one who
left the most community-minded and active descendants was the late John DeYoung.
DeYoung came to Woodinville in 1925 and bought Teegarden's store. He expanded
his business holdings and founded the Lowell DeYoung Company of Woodinville
specializing in feed and fuel. He retired in 1963 and his son, Lowell, now
operates the business. His descendants continue to play an active role in
Woodinville and granddaughter, Lucy, is Woodinville's first mayor."

Woodinville Weekly - May 18, 1998
The new DeYoung Park, a downtown park across from Molbak's, was officially
dedicated in ceremonies held last Thursday at the park. Named in memory of
pioneers John and Ellen DeYoung, the park will serve as a rest, picnic,
performance, and play area. Local council members, Woodinville park
commissioners, business people and residents attended the event.

Phyllis Keller, president of The Woodinville Historical Society, related
the DeYoung's early history. "John DeYoung bought the Teegarden Mercantile
from Clara Jacobsen Teegarden in 1925 and renamed it Woodinville Mercantile.
"The DeYoung family built their home on the property where Washington Mutual
stands today," said Keller.

Lucy DeYoung, Woodinville's first mayor, introduced the DeYoung family. Al
DeYoung, one of John and Ellen's sons, spoke on behalf of the family. He
chronicled the history of his parents' life in Woodinville and told of the
many businesses that they formed. In addition to the store, the DeYoungs
had a feed and grain business, a shingle mill, and other businesses.

"The house that formerly stood on this property was built in the 1920s and
surrounded by these wonderful old trees. The Coopers later bought the house.
In 1979, The Woodinville Weekly rented the house and was the last occupant,"
said Keller. Patti McDougall, president of the Friends Garden Club, announced
that they will maintain the park. Egon and Laina Molbak donated several plants
in the DeYoung's memory.
