William Brice Hughey was born October 29, 1833 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. He was the oldest child of Henry and Ann Wilson. When he was 5 yrs old they moved to Carroll County, Arkansas.

His Father, Henry Hughey, purchased 6 acres of land and farmed there in what was then Crooked Creek Township. Bill's Maternal Grandfather, James Wilson, also lived in the same area.

Bill Married in 1854 to Amanda Jane De Shields, daughter of William De Shields. Amanda was born October 23, 1833 in Tennessee.

Their first 3 children were born before Bill became involved in the Civil War. He served in Harrells Battalion of the Ark Cavalry [Confederate Army] from 1862 to 1864.

On the 1900 Boone Co. Census, Amanda stated she had given birth to 11 children, however only 9 of those children have been identified. The other 2 must have been born and died between Census years.

Bill was a farmer and a carpenter.In 1979 his Grandson, Luther Hughey, in Lead Hill, Ark. showed me a trunk that Bill had made.

Bill Hughey died December 26, 1902, family lore has it he had the hiccups continually 6 days before his death. He was buried in the Milum Cemetery, Boone County, Ark. Amanda died July 27, 1907 and is buried beside him.

[7] Colombus Harrison, born 1871, married Nora Miller
[8] Loduska 'Lodie', born 1873, married J. Samuel Owens
[9] Henry Brice, born 1876, married Maude Day

I was fortunate that my Mother Otie Jane Hughey Raines was in very good health in 1979 and she and I travelled to Lowry and Lead Hill and met her Cousin, Dovie Richardson Matlock Austin and the two of them shared so much history with me and we visited all their Hughey Cousins that were living in Boone County.
