John Allen Raines was born September 4, 1854 in Walker County, Alabama. He was the son of William Bailey and Elizabeth Kennymore Raines. In 1868, when he was 14, his family left Alabama and went into Tennessee for a few months, then moved to Boone County, Arkansas. They are on the Rolling Prarie Twp census of Boone County in 1870. His mother died between 1870-1880. In 1880 he and his father were in Taney County, Misouri, Swan twp, living with his sister Mary and her 2^nd husband, George Haskins. William Bailey died there in 1881. John Al married Mary Elizabeth Bly De Jarnette, May 8, 1883 in Boone County, Arkansas. She was a widow with 2 children: William Henry Dejurnette born 1874 in Wilson County, Kansas, who married Polly Carter and Sarah Eurith De Jarnette, born 1877 in Taney County, Missouri, who married James Roy.

Paul Eli Marvin, married Sophie Manley.

John Allen Jr. was born before they married, and according to the Mincy Valley Church Records in Taney County, Missouri, Elizabeth was denounced from the church because of this.
