Warren Harvey Wight, a farmer and stockman, residing about four miles
east of Bentonville, Ark., was born in Spencer County, Ind., in 1836,
and is a son of James H. and Celia (Springston) Wight, who were of
Welsh and Irish descent, and were born in Philadelphia, Penn., in 1807,
and Kentucky in 1795, respectively.
Previous to the Revolutionary War
three Wight brothers came to America, one locating in
Pennsylvanla, another in New York. The third died. James H. Wight was
of Pennsylvania stock, and a son of James Wight, who immigrated to
Spencer County, Ind. While residing in that county Abraham Lincoln
assisted him many a day in splitting rails. In 1840 he came to Benton
County, Ark., and entered 1,100 acres of land, and here died in
October, 1882. His wife died in March, 1878, leaving two children:
Warren H. and Simeon.
Warren H. was only four years old when his
parents moved to Benton County. At the age of nine years he began
learning the shoemaker's trade, and also assisted his father on the
farm.
During the war he worked exclusively at his trade for the
Confederate army, and after the cessation of hostilities began learning
the blacksmith's trade, and was also engaged in raising fine stock,
making a specialty of jacks and jennies. He now keeps from six to
twelve jacks and from ten to eighteen jennies.
He owns 640 acres of
land in Benton County, and 160 acres in Barry County. He is a Democrat
in politics, and is a member of the Masonic and I. O. O. F.
fraternities.
He was married in 1856 to Miss Lizzie Tennessee Webb, who
was born in Bedford County, Tenn., in 1837. They are the parents of one
child, Matilda Jane, wife of William Easley.
