Item #41 Gilbert Willis Powell:
Gilbert Willis Powell joined the US Navy in February 1944. He had been working at the ship yards in San Diego, CA. He felt guilty for not helping his country and enlisted. He was not drafted because of his age and the number of children he had.
He was sent to the Pacific Theater. His Naval Unit was attached to the Marines and he 'hit the beach' with the Marines on Iwo Jima. He told of how they had numbers in a big spinning cage. If your number was called, you boarded a small craft to go ashore. When I was in High School, the picture of the Marines raising the Flag on Mt. Suribachi was on the front of my history book. Daddy said he was there the day that was taken and was down the hill from the event. He said it was staged for the picture, but it had occurred and they did it again for a picture.
Dad was an airplane mechanic. This was the most memorable time in his life. He died of bone cancer and in those last few weeks of his life, he came in and out of consciousness. When was not with us, he was on Iwo again. Saying, 'Watch, there over there. Be careful. Look out.' His eyes were wild again and he was scared like I am sure he was when they took the Island. Many of his friends died there.
Gilbert Willis Powell was born July 25, 1915 in Carroll County, AR. He died Aug. 6, 1988 in Carroll County, AR. He is the father of Patsy Poor, Fleta Aday, and Betty Renfroe--The Three Sisters--and five other children. His parents were Robert Melton and Lee Gertrude Maples Powell.
